SUMMARY:EMI Alumni Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Emerging Markets Institute (EMI) for our first Alumni Day. In 2016\, EMI launched its inaugural Fellowship for MBA candidates at Cornell Tech\, Cornell University's New York City-based graduate center designed to educate and train future leaders of the digital economy. The initiative combines cross-disciplinary resources spanning Cornell's diverse programs\,&#160\; expertise in emerging markets\, and a shared mission of innovating for global impact. One key aspect of the program include mentorship and lectures from senior executives at leading global and multinational companies. As a core highlight of the Fellowship\, Cornell Tech EMI Fellows complete the Capstone Project delivered in their final semester\, where the Fellows take what they have learned in their global studies of various ecosystems and instill key knowledge through empirical research. Capstone Projects expound on a topic integrating emerging markets trends with the applications and implications of technology and entrepreneurship. They are structured through an analysis of relevant socioeconomic and cultural context\, assessment of opportunities\, and evidence-based recommendations. Capstone Projects offer the Fellows a critical lens through which to explore the unique characteristics and issues that entrench and influence emerging markets. The Alumni Day is an opportunity to celebrate some of the work produced by our Cornell Tech EMI Fellows. Also during the event we will Launch of the book\, Financing Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Emerging Markets and presentation of 2017 Cornell Tech EMI Fellows Projects.

SUMMARY:Financing Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Emerging Markets
DESCRIPTION:There are many challenges and opportunities for driving innovation and entrepreneurship in the developing world today. Join us for a&#160\;Chats in the Stacks (https://www.library.cornell.edu/about/events/booktalks)&#160\;book talk by Lourdes Casanova\, faculty member at the S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management and director of the Emerging Markets Institute\; and Peter Cornelius\, managing director at AlpInvest Partners and head of AlpInvest's economic and strategic research. The book\, just published by Academic Press in November 2017\,&#160\;is coauthored by Soumitra Dutta\, founding Dean of the SC Johnson College of Business. &#160\; Financing Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Emerging Markets&#160\;explains&#160\;how micro and macro foundations of productivity\, and hence economic growth and development\, are inextricably intertwined. Using case studies to portray the entrepreneurial firm and its role in accelerating the speed of innovation of new technologies\, their research identifies common flaws undermining public venture programs. Casanova and Cornelius will discuss how domestic companies compete and what drives innovation using relevant examples of successful ventures from India and China\, two of the largest emerging economies in the developing world.
